SPARK

SPARK is a program for parents – whether single or with a partner – who want to strengthen their relationship skills to benefit their children. Participants work in small groups to learn how to communicate more effectively as well as how to manage conflict and stress.

The program includes:

  • All curriculum materials
  • Follow-up sessions for parents
  • Referrals to other services as needed
  • Assistance with childcare and transportation
  • Meals/snacks provided

There are four workshops available.

  • Loving Couples, Loving Children will help parents learn that by modeling strong communication skills within their relationship, their children reap the benefits. Topics include emotion coaching, reaching your boiling point, communication, and handling stress. The workshop uses a curriculum developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, world-renowned relationship experts.
  • Love and Logic is a hands-on parenting class that focuses on specific strategies for managing the behavior or your children as well as disciplining. The English-speaking workshop focuses on parenting children under the age of six whereas the Spanish workshop focuses on parenting for children of all ages, including teenagers. Only parents who have completed Loving Couples, Loving Children, may enroll.
  • Strengthening Multiethnic Families and Communities (SMFC) targets culturally diverse parents of children aged 3-18 years who are committed to leading a violence-free, healthy lifestyle. This Spanish-speaking program is available in King County twice a year. Only parents who have completed Love and Logic may enroll.
  • Loving Couples, Loving Children/ Love & Logic Hybrid combines the Loving Couples, Loving Children and Love & Logic classes into one. The workshop is available in both English and Spanish in King County four times a year. No prerequisite workshops required, however, the class is offered on a limited basis.
  • The scheduling of classes is dependent on the availability of host sites. If you are a referring agency and can host one of these classes at your location in the future, we would love to hear from you.
