Joey Stearns first learned about Children's Home Society of Washington while taking classes at Green River Community College. Her practicum led her to the on-campus childcare center, the Green River Child Development Center, operated by Children's Home Society of Washington. As soon as her practicum was complete, she enrolled her daughter Melinda, in the Early Head Start program.
While Melinda was in the toddler classroom, educators quickly noticed that she was developmentally behind other children her age. They worked with Melinda's school district to enroll her in a special education preschool to ensure her needs were being met. With their guidance, Melinda was able to attend this special preschool in the mornings as well as participate in Green River's Early Head Start program in the afternoon.
"Children's Home Society is like a second family to us. Without their support and guidance, we would not be as happy or well-adjusted."
Joey is grateful for the support she received from the educators at Green River. They helped her learn how to take the knowledge she was learning in her college classes, tailor it to the needs of her daughter, and apply it at home.
With their help, Melinda graduated from preschool no longer needing special services. She entered Kindergarten at the same level as other children her age. At the same time, with the support of Children's Home Society staff, Joey was able to complete the Early Childhood Program at Green River Community College and go on to Evergreen State College to pursue her dream of teaching.
