Leave No Child
Waiting Mentoring Project
The Leave No Child Waiting Mentoring Project is a
volunteer mentoring
program in support of children whose parents are currently or have been
incarcerated in state correctional facilities.
Volunteer mentors are positive adult role models for children who may
be struggling at home or in school, a common outcome of having a parent
arrested and jailed. Mentors are linked with children between the ages
of 5 and 14, offering advocacy support to the child by
- Listening to the
child’s concerns
and questions as
well as those of caregivers
- Assisting with
schoolwork and encouraging
extracurricular
activities
- Creating
opportunities for recreation and
relaxation with the
child
- Providing family

Parents
as Teachers
A parent education and school readiness program for children from birth
to three years old. Parents receive information regarding their child's
social, emotional, intellectual, language and motor development. They
learn ways and techniques to encourage the positive growth and
development of their child. Parents meet regularly with a certified
parent educator. They also spend time with other parents to gain
insights and share experiences. Some material is available in Spanish.
Selected sites also have staff certified to deliver similar services
for families with children ages 3 to 5 years.
Next Generation
Next Generation home visitors provide information on parenting skills
and healthy early childhood development. We also make referrals that
help link teens with vital community services, including housing, food,
education, and employment assistance.

Parents 22 years of age of less, who are pregnant, or have an infant six months or younger, can benefit from information and support.
This collaborative program in east King County offers support services to help young families provide a nurturing home for
their children. CHSW coordinates the parent mentor component of this program, which matches trained volunteers one-on-one with
young families. Mentors support young parents by providing parenting information, help accessing community resources and a
non-judgmental, listening presence. Mentors are asked to spend 3-6 hours a month with their family and to commit to the program
for a minimum of one year. Bilingual Spanish-English volunteers are encouraged to apply. Qualified mentors will be aged 21 and
older, have a Washington State Drivers License, and a genuine interest in supporting a young family. Applicants must be willing
