Adoption

Adoption Resource Center
The Adoption Resource Center is dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of those whose lives have been touched by adoption. The ARC offers pre- and post-adoption counseling, specializing in adoptive or foster families with later-placed children. The ARC also provides information, support, counseling, advocacy, search assistance, and education for triad members (adopted persons, birth parents, adoptive parents) and professionals working in the adoption field. The ARC completes home studies for international adoptive placements in partnership with a placement agency. The Adoption Resource Center does not place children.

Counseling

Child and Family Counseling
In the effort to enhance the capacity of families to be safe and nurturing places for children, CHSW professionals offer counseling services in multiple settings to children and families who face a variety of challenges. Counseling can help families build on their strengths, address challenges and improve family relationships. CHSW is a Licensed Community Mental Health Agency, providing counseling, case management and supportive services to eligible families in Spokane County.

Family Support & Parent Education

Spokane Family Resource Center
This community-based parent information and family resource center (PIRC) offers a wide variety of activities and services for families. By providing information, education and support, as well as links to other available community resources, the Center seeks to promote the self-sufficiency and well-being of families.

The Department of Education-funded statewide program helps children succeed by fostering family success through parent involvement. Family Advocates, working in partnership with schools, parents and communities strengthen the bond between home/school/community to enhance the academic success of children. Families benefit from information and referral, parent resource libraries, early childhood development programs, parent support groups, family advocacy and involvement in education and policy reform.

For more information about specific classes and programs at the PIRCs, please visit CHSW's parent information and resource center online and go to the local calendars section.

Parents As Teachers
Parents As Teachers is an early childhood parent education  school readiness and family support program. Parents receive information regarding their child's social, emotional, intellectual, language and motor development. They learn ways and techniques to encourage the positive growth and development of their child. Parents meet regularly with a certified parent educator. They also spend time with other parents to gain insights and share experiences. Some material is available in Spanish. Interpreters make participation possible for Hispanic and Russian families. PAT is a curriculum-focused birth to three-year-old program. The Spokane region also has educators trained to provide early childhood training for three-year-olds to kindergarden along with other specialized areas.

Relatives Raising Relatives
Today many grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc., find themselves unexpectedly raising grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc. This program provides education, support and information for these families, whose children have often experienced significant losses. The children frequently bring challenging behavior into a family often facing limited resources and isolation. Support groups and a monthly newsletter help relatives meet some of the special circumstances they face.

The Nurturing Program
The Nurturing Program is an interactive family enrichment program. CHSW facilitates two versions of the program. One is specifically for foster, adoptive and relative caregiver families. This version spans 12 weeks. The second version is offered to families with school-aged children and spans 15 weeks. The goal of the program is to provide caregivers and children the tools they need to create and sustain a nurturing home life thereby reducing the risk of further out-of-home placement and increasing family management.
