nephews, etc. This program provides education, support and information
for these families, whose children have often experienced significant
losses associated with their parents’ inability to care for
them. The children frequently bring challenging behavior into a family
often facing limited resources and isolation. Support groups and a
monthly newsletter help relatives meet some of the special
circumstances they face.
Special
Support Services
Alternative Response System (ARS)
This program is available in
Tacoma
When a report of
suspected child abuse and neglect is filed with Child
Protective Services (CPS), state caseworkers assess the potential risk
to a child. If workers find that the level of risk for future harm is
low, the case is referred to an outside agency as part of the
Alternative Response System. Children's Home Society contracts with CPS
to provide special support services to these low-level-risk families,
with the goal of keeping the child safely in the home and improving
family functioning.
